Dance for Joy!
I usually dance for joy. It is said that if you are not happy with your life, you won’t be able to make others around you happy (Aside: "It is not at all necessary to keep your fellow beings happy all the time! How much you try to do this, there are chances that others are not happy with you at any cost. I have personal experience with this as I am very tough to be made happy by others, so I cannot expect them to be happy with my deeds!").
Now, for making myself happy, first of all, I had to find out what makes me happy and what brings me joy. When I asked myself, I got so many answers, and dancing was one of those things that I found can make my mind free and fill it with butterflies. That was the first step I made to start this journey to make myself satisfied with my life so that I can make my fellow beings happy.
Next, my endeavor was to find out the genre that I can choose to stick to. Since I was trained in Bharatnatyam in my early days, I thought it would be a great idea if I started with semi-classical pieces rooted in this style of dancing. I have been pretty confident about my choreo skills in Bharatnatyam semi-classical, so this was fixed. But then, I was always mesmerized whenever I saw a Kathak performance. Once I even tried to learn it but could not continue for some reasons that are totally pointless now!
The basics that I got from my mentor Soma, those few days, were awesome and I wanted to try them in my journey. It is not easy for a beginner to do choreography for any dance form for that matter, and tougher for Kathak I believe! Here, I decided to self-learn it from some Bollywood numbers though not knowing how authentic it would be to learn from a source like that. But still, I thought I would give it a try, and I told myself that I would not go for a particular genre or something; instead, I will do whatever comes to me naturally at the moment.
That was how I convinced myself to begin with this piece and started working on it. After some initial attempts, I ended up selecting this evergreen song for dancers, Taal se taal mila...! In this, my sole purpose was to fill myself with joy, and for that, I did whatever I could do. ADDC choreography is too casually done for beginner-level dancers. Do enjoy and share your comments.
