How and Why Paraphrase? Paraphrasing Basics

Paraphrasing Basics

Data is the oil and energy of the decade, and every single person has to deal with it almost every day. The proliferation of data in the form of textual content is so heavy these days that people get easily exhausted and want something fresh and unique to them to feel attracted. However, those who make the content have to bring it with so many elements that they tend to neglect the quality of it, which in turn takes away the active consumers of this very content.

To bring quality to your content, the first thing that you have to keep in mind is its uniqueness. In simple words, the content should not be copied. Nonetheless, from university research to website content making, people refer to lots of books, articles, journals, etc., so, naturally, copied content may peep inside your writing.

How to get rid of this plagiarism? It is here, paraphrasing comes in handy. In this article, I will be talking about how and why to paraphrase the text that you borrow from another source. Let me first introduce the topics covered in this article:
  • What Do You Mean by Paraphrasing?
  • Why Paraphrase? What Is Plagiarism? Is Plagiarism Allowed at All?
  • Is Paraphrasing Legal?
  • How to Paraphrase?

What Do You Mean by Paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing is a technique of reproducing the content you have read from anywhere (books, websites, etc.) in your own words to make it your own!

However, unlike you assume, paraphrasing is not child’s play; it is not an easy task of replacing a few words with their synonyms or simply changing the word order. It is an area where even academicians fail. Paraphrasing includes making efforts to translate the meaning of what you have read and creating new content that is unique in all terms.

Why Paraphrase? What Is Plagiarism? Is Plagiarism Allowed at All?

What is content paraphrasing? Paraphrasing is a distinctive way by which you can remove the threat of plagiarism from your content. It is an important skill you must have if you are into developing any kind of content that is ultimately meant for publishing in any form.

What is plagiarism?

In the simplest terms, plagiarism is nothing but stealing another person’s property. If you think of it as just copying a little bit of the content or borrowing a few words, then you are diluting the seriousness of the offense you do. Mind you! It is just your fancy. If you are caught, you are done!

Plagiarism is a fraud!

Plagiarism is a fraud! Besides text, if you are stealing images, videos, or even ideas, all of them fall under this umbrella term. Now, if copying an idea also falls under the act, then how does just paraphrasing help you here? Although you paraphrase the content, the idea is the same! It is here you have to use References or Bibliography, in which you list out those sources from where you have borrowed the ideas.

Now, some ask me, how much plagiarism is allowed?

There might be hundreds of suggestions for this question, calculating it in terms of percentage. If that is the case, the figure should be ‘0%.’ Stealing a car as a whole or in parts is still stealing!

DupliChecker, Grammarly, Plagiarisma, PlagTracker, etc. are some of the free plagiarism-checking tools available in the market. Copyscape, Turnitin, Whitesmoke, etc. are some of the other tools that you can use to check your content for plagiarism issues. Moreover, many of these tools in their Pro version allow you to polish your content as well, thus, becoming truly your writing partners. You can use any of these content paraphrasing tools to check whether the content developed by you involves plagiarism.

Is Paraphrasing Legal?

Is paraphrasing illegal? If this question troubles you, then let me tell you straight that paraphrasing is not illegal. Instead, plagiarism is! However, when it comes to academic writing and research papers, paraphrasing or rephrasing would not be enough. Whenever you borrow words from other sources, it is required and a courtesy to cite them. You can either give inline citations or provide a bibliography at the end of your article or use a combination of both, according to the guidelines or stylesheet that you follow. Whichever way you choose, paraphrasing the content you borrow from others is a must.

Now, let's see how you can paraphrase your content.

How to Paraphrase?

In this section, I will give you certain points to remember when you approach and deal with your content. Check out the points listed below:

  • First of all, read the original text (the source content) twice or thrice and understand it thoroughly.

  • Keeping the original text aside, try to reproduce what you read in your own words.

  • When you see any unfamiliar word, look for its meaning and get the context in which the author has used it, and then try to use a synonym or a similar word (or a phrase) that exactly matches the context.

  • Remember that you can paraphrase the content sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, or you can even read the entire text from the source, understand it, and then reproduce it as a whole. I would certainly prefer the third!

  • If in any way you are not able to paraphrase a particular content and you think it is much relevant to the topic of discussion, you can provide the same in quotes, but remember to give the source (citation) along with the quoted content. This has to be done even when you are borrowing some sort of information, such as statistics, weather reports, research results, use cases used by others, etc.

  • Check your text against the original to verify if the tone and the meaning of the author have been kept intact.

  • Use a plagiarism tool to check how authentic your script is. If both (your content and the source content) look somewhat similar, again work on it to remove the remaining plagiarism.

You can write a particular text in several ways, while all making absolute sense.

Here, an important thing that can help you is the fact that you can write a particular sentence in several ways, while all making absolute sense. Let’s check an instance.

Let’s say, you have to introduce a particular programming command ‘xxxx’ that is used for performing a task ‘yyyy’ in a specific programming language in your document, where you are instructing your readers. You can think of providing this information in many ways as shown below:

  • We can do yyyy by using a simple command, xxxx.

  • With the xxxx command, we can perform yyyy.

  • It is better to use the xxxx command to bring the desired result while performing yyyy.

  • We better use this command to perform yyyy.

  • We can make use of the xxxx command while performing yyyy.

  • The xxxx command is the most useful when it comes to doing yyyy.

  • YYYY can be done/performed/fulfilled with the help of the xxxx command.

  • To do yyyy, we have to use the following command.

  • To perform this, we can use the below code.

  • We can do yyyy through by typing the code xxxx in the terminal.

  • While doing yyyy, we have to use the xxxx command.

  • YYYY can be done by using the below command.

  • YYYY can be carried out with the help of the command mentioned below.

This is a simple example of how you can paraphrase a sentence. Let’s take another instance.

Original:

From connection to collaboration, Tableau is the most powerful, secure, and flexible end-to-end analytics platform for your data. Elevate people with the power of data. Designed for the individual; scaled for the enterprise. Tableau is the only business intelligence platform that turns your data into insights that drive action.

Plagiarized/Inaccurate Paraphrasing:

Tableau is the most powerful, secure, and flexible tool, used for doing end-to-end data analytics, from the connection to the collaboration of your data. Tableau, which is designed for the individual and scaled for the enterprise, lifts people with its data power. It is the only business intelligence tool used for turning your data into insights that in turn lead to actions.

Paraphrased:

Tableau, the most sought-after Business Intelligence (BI) tool, empowers users to handle data in the most meaningful way to dig out valuable insights from it. Its secure and adaptive nature makes it perfect for current-day Big Data Analytics. Tableau is designed for individual users, as well as it can be leveraged by various companies.

If writing error-free content is an art, then paraphrasing makes your content a masterpiece in every sense!

I understand that the instances where you have to apply paraphrasing might be quite tougher than the above. In such cases, only wide reading and constant writing practices can play key roles in helping you enter the world of perfect writing. To sum up, I would say that if writing error-free content is an art, then paraphrasing makes your content a masterpiece in every sense!
